Human Metapneumovirus (hMPV)

Human Metapneumovirus (hMPV) is a negative-sense single-stranded RNA virus of the family Pneumoviridae and is closely related to the Avian Metapneumovirus (AMPV) subgroup C. It was isolated for the first time in 2001 in the Netherlands. hMPV can affect all age groups and normally causes mild-to-moderate respiratory illness but sometimes the infection can be severe in young children, older adults, and immunocompromised individuals.
In the end of year 2024 and beginning of year 2025, World Health Organization (WHO) has reported an increase in respiratory viral infections, including human metapneumovirus (hMPV) infections in the Northern Hemisphere. hMPV is classified into genetic groups A and B, further divided into lineages A1, A2.1, A2.2.1, A2.2.2, B1, and B2 based on the F gene sequence, demonstrating significant antigenic diversity. Recent studies have identified novel subtypes such as A2.2.1 and A2.2.2, highlighting its genetic variability. |
