Mpox (MPXV) is a zoonotic virus belonging to the orthopoxvirus genus within the Poxviridae family and is primarily endemic to Central and West Africa. While the exact animal reservoir remains uncertain, rodents are considered the most likely source. Transmission occurs through close contact with bodily fluids or respiratory secretions, both from animals to humans and between humans.
In early May 2022, a small number of Mpox cases were detected in the UK, Spain, and other European countries. The emergence of confirmed and suspected cases without direct travel links to endemic regions was an unusual event. By early July 2022, nearly 8,000 confirmed cases had been reported across 63 Member States spanning five World Health Organization (WHO) Regions.
In August 2024, the WHO reported over 14,000 cases of the virus, with 524 deaths—a significant increase from 2023. Subsequently, the WHO declared the Mpox virus a Public Health Emergency of International Concern.
