Nipah virus (NiV)
|
Nipah virus (NiV) is a zoonotic paramyxovirus that can spread from animal reservoirs, particularly fruit bats, to humans and between people through close contact or contaminated materials. It has a high case-fatality rate (up to ~75 %) and no licensed vaccine or specific antiviral therapy, so public health responses prioritize early detection, isolation, contact tracing, and supportive care.
In January 2026, health authorities in the Indian state of West Bengal reported a cluster of Nipah virus (NiV) infections, with at least five laboratory-confirmed cases, including several healthcare workers. Affected individuals have been treated in isolation, and close to 100 contacts have been placed under quarantine as part of containment efforts. The outbreak triggered enhanced health surveillance and COVID-style screening at several airports in Asia aimed at reducing cross-border transmission risk. |
